WoS Interview: 'You can play the entire game without ever spending a penny.'

Check out this interview with Slightly Mad Studios' creative director Andy Tudor.  In it, he comments on the differences between the company's two upcoming racing titles (World of Speed and Project CARS), though the interview is mostly about World of Speed.  And yes, he says World of Speed will be playable in it's entirety without ever spending real money on it.  Haters of Pay-to-Win models rejoice!

Drift City review

Drift City is a MMO racing game on Games Campus (http://driftcity.gamescampus.com/).  It's cell-shaded graphics and arcade-y feel make for a blast to peoeple who enjoyed games like Crazy Taxi and the Mario Kart series.  It's Free 2 Play, and in the few weeks I've been playing it I haven't seen any overpowered items purchasable with 'Campus Credits'.

Games Campus may want you to spend you hard-earned paycheck on Campus Credits, the in-game currency purchasable with real money.  Luckily, you don't have too, as there are tons of ways to make money, including an auction house where you can sell old parts or other items.

One of the neater aspects about this game is the item drops.  You get drops for combos (wrong lane driving, drifting, jumps, etc.)  The higher combo chains you can manage, the more items you get.

The Driver Hub is the main area where everyone starts, with a parts shop, car dealership, auction house, and more.  Think of it as a safe town in an RPG.  You can meet with friends, start or join a Crew (clan) and more.

Once you leave the Driver Hub you'll wind up in the first town, where you're greeted with the beginning missions after you accept them.

Most of the game revolves around doing story missions, delivery missions, and evidently there is PvP, but I haven't done that yet.  Missions are usually arresting HUVs, unidentified vehicles that have been wreaking havoc in the city.
Delivery missions are just what they sound like.  After recieving the mission you must drive through every delivery spot on the map ASAP.

Now for the RPG aspects.  As you gain experience from completing missions and quests, you earn Mittron, which doubles as both money and gas.  After you earn so much experience you gain a player level, which allows you to higher level parts.

This game is perfect to play with a game controller too, which is great, because playing racing games on a keyboard can be very awkward.  I don't want to turn the steering wheel as far to the side as possible with one key press!

The game is Japanese Anime-styled, which might turn some people off.  I though I wouldn't get in to it because of that, but boy, was I wrong.  This game is ADDICTIVE!  The anime stuff is very unobtrusive as well.

I highly recommend any arecade racing fan the check this out.  What do you have to lose?  It's free forever!

P.S. I haven't spent a cent on this game and I'm level 26, been playing for weeks.  Check it out.  You won't regret it!

SHIFT 2: Unleashed review

I've been a fan of the Need for Speed series since the 90s.  I'm also a fan of realistic driving games like Forza.  Shift 2 strikes the perfect balance.

I'm only 31% through the career modeand I've played 26 hours.  The cars handle great and are upgradeable, which I love.  You must work your way up the latter to be able to participate in certain events.  you may also need to buy or modify a car to match the race requirements. It makes it fun adding the upgradeable element, or buying new cars to use in races.

Graphics are superb.  The sounds are also good, but some engines sound a little like wet cardboard.  Not too noticeable though.

Overall I'd give this game a 4.5/5

I'll be updating the review as I play more.

World of Speed - E3 Customization Trailer

This video from E3 shows a few of the customization options we'll have in Slightly Mad Studios' upcoming game, World of Speed.  In this game, you'll be able to customize your car to fit various roles your team may need, such as a tank or 'glass cannon' (fast but weak) akin to a traditional RPG.  More next-generation games are doing this, like The Crew.

Looking great so far!  Is everyone else as hyped as I am about this game?

The Crew first impression

I was lucky enough to be receive an invitation to the most recent closed beta of Ubisoft and Ivory Tower’s upcoming MMO/racing title The Crew.  This game had been touted as a spiritual successor to The Test Drive series.  I loved Test Drive Ultimate 2, so naturally I was extremely excited to check it out.  I was not disappointed.

Aside from the bugs that plague any game before release, this game seems pretty tight and polished.  The graphics are gorgeous, showcasing beautiful water effects, intricate textures, and sweet-looking cars.  The game (as of yet) drops you right into a cop chase in the beginning, which was a bit confusing, but the onscreen queues were obvious enough that I was able to beat it on the first try.

After the introduction I was presented with a bevy of missions.  The beta only included missions in the Midwest, although the entire USA was drivable.  As one would expect, story missions are required to advance the story, but there are also plenty of side missions.  To a degree side missions are mandatory: players must advance to a certain level to complete certain story missions.  The Crew does a great job of integrating RPG elements.

As the player does quests and performs feats of driving skill he gains experience and levels up, earning the abilities to use better parts and use better cars.  You can also team up with up to three other players for quests, bettering your chances of winning.  Or you could all just show off your sweet cars in the always-online world.

In the few hours I spent playing The Crew, I was quite impressed.  The sound was good, the cinema and story were gripping, and the protagonist was suitably manly.  Using a controller, this game looks and feels great so far.

My only qualm?  The $60 price tag at release.  There are also real money transactions available in-game, which I didn’t look in to much, but I’m strongly of an ‘either/or’ opinion.  Either make the game a one time purchase, or make it Free to Play with in game transactions.  This is a bold decision by Ubisoft, with competition from the upcoming F2P title World of Speed.

Expect The Crew on the shelves and for download on Windows PC, Xbox 360, and PS4 on November 11th, 2014.
